Overview of Stroke Medicine
Stroke is the commonest cause of acquired disability in adults. Stroke encompasses elements of neurology, cardiovascular disease, general medicine, elderly care medicine, ageing and rehabilitation. All stroke specialists have core knowledge and skills in all areas of diagnosis, investigation and treatment relevant to the care of stroke patients. There have been major advances in stroke and Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA – “mini-stroke”) management over the last few years. There is significant overlap with neurological disorders and some patients presenting with typical stroke like symptoms may turn out to have other disorders such as epilepsy or migraine. Stroke specialists work closely with neurologists, neuroradiologists and vascular surgeons.
